Chance The Rapper: From Independent To Mainstream

A quick look at Chance the Rapper’s impressive success story.

Everyone loves a self-made man. But when it comes to artists, most people think that the only way to “make it” in the music industry is if they can land a contract with a major label.

But  Chance the Rapper was different. Instead of trying to become a superstar in the traditional method by “selling out” and compromising his beliefs, Chance proved that today’s technology and pure artistry can make you famous.

He inspired me to break off my 9-5 job and open up my own Oahu tree service company. Today, my company has been exponentially growing! I owe it to Chance the Rapper’s story.

Born Chancelor Jonathan Bennett to middle-class parents, Chance is a rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, philanthropist, and activist. He’s an independent artist that’s being hailed by many – experts and fans alike – as the most talented rapper of his generation.

YC The Cynic: Kemba The Artist

YC The Cynic: Kemba The Artist

Underground artists rarely get enough credit for their gifts. Not because of their lack of talent but simply because of lack of exposure. Here’s an artist that deserves a little more time in the spotlight.

I first heard of this hip-hop artist when in a private limo when I was in Honolulu, Hawaii. I requested the driver to play some hip-hop/rap music and he put this on.

Over Sands, Making Waves

Over Sands, Making Waves

This British duo is definitely coming out of its shell. Despite their short existence, they are gaining positive support from their fans and critics all around. Since their first release back in 2015, they have been gaining momentum. Their music is really something to appreciate. It’s groovy yet soulful, with a little bit of indie guitar and smooth vocals. It’s definitely a sound the masses would enjoy.

Interesting enough is their story of coming up. This brotherly duo from London has their label, B3SCI based out in LA. They started out doing sessions in a beach house. Then they decided it would be a good idea to change locations to an abandoned school building in London. Crazy right? “Roman Rooms’ was mainly recorded there and specifically at night, giving the music it’s murky feel.

Glass Animals: It’s So Clear Now

Glass Animals: It's So Clear Now

I can picture four crystal clear glass animals. Animals you wouldn’t dare catch together even sharing the same breath of air. But imagine these animals work together to create a reality unknown to others. One so beautifully constructed, you can’t help but listen and appreciate. Dave Bayley, Drew MacFarlane, Edmund Irwin-Singer, and Joe Seaward are Glass Animals. I can promise you they are nothing like you’ve ever heard before. And yes, I mean that in a good way.

This dangerous foursome constructs breathy vocal percussion and hooks along with an Indie, trip-hop, r&b soul music to create a whole new territory of sound. Before being who they are today they were actually some kids who were ever so slightly dipping their toes into the music industry while mostly trying to establish degrees for themselves. Playing it safe basically. Music was cooking slowly on the back burner, whereas school was always the priority.
